The crew of a freighter that half-sunk off the Greek island of Santorini on Christmas Eve spent Christmas Day thanking the coastguard for rescuing them, only to be arrested on Boxing Day for smuggling. The North Korean-flagged Elisabeth hit an islet southwest of Santorini during a storm on Wednesday. Coastguard officers evacuated the Ukrainian crew, and took them to hospital. Inspecting the ship the next day in better weather, they found 35 tons of smuggled cigarettes instead of the declared cargo of cement. The crew's rescue was featured on Greek television as a heart-warming Christmas-Day tale, with crew members offering thanks and season's greetings. All have been arrested on smuggling charges.
